Key Stage 3
This is designed to give students a solid basic education in the subject. It is also geared towards giving them the knowledge, understanding and skills to progress onto the GCSE course if so desired.

An end of Key Stage target level is given to the students early on and they work towards achieving this over the next three years.

Projects are designed to develop the student's skills and understanding in a variety of areas including research, knowledge of artists, art movements and cultures, analysis, development of ideas, exploration of media and creative and original responses.

Three projects are usually taught in year 7, covering 2D work, print making and 3D art. Projects in Years 8 and 9 address similar skills but at a progressively higher level.

Key Stage 4
Students are introduced to the course and are shown examples of GCSE coursework to illustrate the exam board's requirements. They follow the AQA Unendorsed syllabus.
The students are given the Assessment Objectives as stated by the exam board and these are explained in detail so that the students are made fully aware of the expectations. The Assessment Objectives are:
  • Developing ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources demonstrating analytical and cultural understanding.

  • Refining ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes.

  • Recording ideas, observations and insights relevant to their intentions in visual and/or other forms.

  • Presenting a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating critical and analytical understanding, realising intentions and where appropriate, making connections between visual, written, oral and other elements.

Students are required to submit two or three units of work. A unit of work will be a project based on a theme and the work produced should answer the above Assessment Objectives. Students sit a Controlled Test in March of year 11. This is of ten hours duration split over two days. All work for the course must be submitted for assessment by the end of the first half of the summer term of year 11.
